Meet FUNIC, a winner of the 2020 edition of the Cameroon Heroes Awards, in the category of Impact Inclusive vocational training of the year. FUNIC is a community university, Vocational Training Academy, with the vision to see an African society where everyone irrespective of their economic standing has access to good education. FUNIC has put forth several innovative initiatives through their Vocational Training Institute called Fotabe Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy (FELA).
They believe that money should not be the defining factor for who gets quality education in Cameroon and Africa. FELA has offered scholarships worth 230 million Francs since its inception in 2014. FUNIC places strong emphasis on a holistic educational approach to all its students where social and ethical responsibilities are as important as academic excellence. FELA’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Forum is an annual 3 days free event which brings together 100 active high school student leaders from across the country. Participants are trained on various subjects and encouraged to become ethical entrepreneurial leaders in the African continent. The forum has trained more than 800 high school student’s country wide.
FUNIC was the winner for the Cameroon Heroes Awards because of the impact of their training activities and scholarships offered which has changed the lives of many individuals. All nominees had a 40% vote from the general public, 50% from the commission of independent judges and 10% from the GAICAM board. The judges which constituted 50% of the votes had to carry out their background check and private review in order to independently pass their judgment to whether the candidate deserves the award or not. FUNIC had a 50% vote from our independent commission of judges, 16.7% from the general public and a 4% from the GAICAM board. Making a total of 70.7% votes final results with the runner up having 23.29% which made him the winner of the said category.
